Continuamos acercando las producciones del I Concurso de Escritura de Cuentos y Leyendas Locales en Inglés, llevado a cabo durante el ciclo lectivo 2020 por el Profesorado de Inglés perteneciente al Instituto Superior de Formación Docente Continua y Técnica "Félix Atilio Cabrera". La iniciativa en aporte a nuestra identidad cultural, genera un espacio donde los Jóvenes estudiantes de las escuelas secundarias, de los profesorados de inglés, así como también los profesores de este idioma de la Provincia de Formosa, se sienten invitados a desplegar su creatividad desarrollando distintos tipos de historias, cuentos relatos, etc. Donde sus personajes, cobren vida y sus historias se hagan papel. Como es sabido el contacto con la literatura y con ese mundo gozoso y placentero hace posible realizar el despliegue de la narrativa, con personajes bien definidos, donde la realidad y la fantasía se entremezclan y juegan. THE SOUND OF THE SILENCE EL SONIDO DEL SILENCIO Por MARÍA BELÉN CAPPELLO Siesta time... tereré[1] by my side... Not any tereré but one with a lot of ice and yuyos[2] in the yerba[3], as to make it even more desirable. La hora de la siesta... tereré a mi lado ... No cualquier tereré mas uno con mucho hielo y yuyos en la yerba, para hacerlo incluso mas deseable. Around three pm, you can barely see anybody in the streets because here in Formosa, the tradition is to sleep at siesta time. So what? It's not a big deal... but only it is in fact A BIG DEAL. Cerca de las tres de la tarde, apenas puedes ver a alguien en las calles porque aquí en Formosa, la tradición es dormir la siesta. ¿Entonces qué? No es la gran cosa... solo que es de hecho LA GRAN COSA. Siesta time has a lot of aspects to bear in mind. For instance, you need to embrace the period of time between 1 and (at least!) 4 pm. Don't think about doing anything rather than sleeping for a while and drinking tereré the minute you get up. La siesta tiene muchos aspectos a tener en cuenta. Por ejemplo, necesitas abrazar el período de tiempo entre la 1 y (¡por lo menos!) las 4 de la tarde. No pienses en hacer nada mas que dormir un rato y tomar tereré al minuto que te levantas. Aww Formosa, what a lovely city to visit and (with luck) to live in, only that, that's not all. There is some magic in it, which you can see or experience as it happened to me, some time ago. Oh Formosa, que adorable ciudad para visitar y (con suerte) vivir, solo que, eso no es todo. Hay algo de magia en ella, la cual puedes ver o experimentar como me ocurrió a mí, algún tiempo atrás. My grandparents live in a big ranch called "La Perla" that is situated in El Recreo colony that used to be called El Quirquincho[4]; 220 km from the capital city in Patiño Department[5]. It is a magnificent and charming place where you can ride horses, make home-made meals, have long walks at dawn, enjoy milking the cows and many other family activities. Mis abuelos viven en una gran estancia llamada "La Perla" que está situada en la colonia El Recreo, que solia ser llamada El Quirquincho, a 220 km de la ciudad capital en el Departamento Patiño. Es un lugar magnífico y encantador donde puedes andar a caballo, hacer comidas caseras, tener largas caminatas en el amanecer, disfrutar de ordeñar las vacas y muchas otras actividades familiares. The striking description developed above could have made you want to pack your bag and travel there; I know the feeling! But wait, there is still more. I've already said it is a magical place for many reasons but one of the most important motives is an incredible lake, in a paddock called LLOGOT NAGAY[6] , and it is a lake that never gets dry and there, a lot of animals, specifically formosenian[7] animals in danger of extinction such as yacaré, carpincho, carayá, anteater, charata, Ypaka'a, guazuncho, aguará guazú, fox, mirikiná monkey and many others; live and enjoy wildlife around it. La llamativa descripcion desarrollada arriba pudo haberte hecho querer empacar tu mochila y viajar allí; ¡conozco el sentimiento! Pero espera, hay aun mas. Ya he dicho que es un lugar mágico por muchas razones, pero uno de los motivos mas importantes es un lago increíble, en un potrero llamado LLOGOT NAGAY, y es un lago que nunca se seca y allí, muchos animales, específicamente animales formoseños en peligro de extinción como el yacaré, carpincho, carayá, oso hormiguero, charata, Y'paka'a, guazuncho, aguará guazú, zorro, mono miriquiná y muchos otros; viven y disfrutan de la vida silvestre alrededor de él. A magical lake, a magical place where this story developed. Un lago mágico, un lugar mágico donde ésta historia se desarrolló. It was around two or three in the afternoon and I remember I was playing outside the house with my cousin and my aunt. They are Mariana, who is one year older than me, and my aunt Soledad who is three years older than me. We were always together, having fun and laughing a lot but unfortunately for us, we decided to go to the woods to keep on playing. Eran cerca de las dos o tres de la tarde y recuerdo que estaba jugando afuera de la casa con mi prima y mi tia. Ellas son Mariana, que es un año mayor que yo, y mi tia Soledad que es tres años mayor que yo. Siempre estábamos juntas, divirtiéndonos y riéndonos mucho pero desafortunadamente para nosotras, decidimos ir al bosque a seguir jugando. Steamy, windy and sweaty was the atmosphere, 40º degrees more or less; no water, no tereré but the three of us just running and singing around the trees. Vaporosa, ventosa y sudorosa era la atmosfera, 40º grados mas o menos; sin agua, sin tereré más las tres sólo corriendo y cantando alrededor de los arboles. From one moment to the other, it was as if the wind suddenly stopped. Everything seemed quite; no one sang or shouted or laughed anymore and it was kind of scary, though it was siesta time; nothing to be afraid of right? De un momento a otro, fue como si el viento se detuviera de pronto. Todo parecía quieto; nadie cantaba o gritaba o reia y era un poco tenebroso, aunque era de siesta; nada que temer, ¿no? I looked up to the trees and I remembered no leaf moving. Time seemed to have stopped. What had happened? A minute ago, we were dancing and laughing and all of a sudden, I didn't feel joy anymore but a deep sense of fear. Miré hacia arriba a los arboles y recuerdo que ninguna hoja se movía. El tiempo parecía haberse parado. ¿Qué había pasado? Un minuto antes, estabamos bailando y riendonos y de repente, ya no sentía alegría mas si un sentimiento profundo de miedo. Fear of what? It was La Perla, my place, my happiness... I had never felt like that before but I knew, at the same time, that something was wrong. All I could hear was silence. ¿Miedo a qué? Era la Perla, mi lugar, mi felicidad... Nunca me había sentido así antes pero sabía, al mismo tiempo, que algo estaba mal. Todo lo que podía oír era el silencio. The silence was deep. But then a long, long, long whistle was heard. Oh lord, it penetrated my ears, it gave me the chills. What was it? What was actually happening? I was so scared that I had to find my cousin and aunt to feel safe again. El silencio era profundo. Pero luego un silbido largo, largo fue escuchado. Oh Dios, penetró mis oídos, me dio escalofríos. ¿Qué era? ¿Qué estaba pasando en realidad? Tenía tanto miedo que debía encontrar a mi prima y tía para sentirme segura de nuevo. Mariana! Sole! I shouted. I looked down, around me, no one was there. My heart beat faster and faster but I had to stay calm. So I started walking and looking for them. One minute ago, they were by my side and then, they were gone. ¡Mariana! ¡Sole! Grité. Miré hacia abajo, alrededor mío, no estaba nadie allí. Mi corazón latía más y más rápido, pero debía permanecer calmada. Entonces comencé a caminar y a buscarlas. Un minuto antes, ellas estaban a mi lado y luego, desaparecieron. As I was walking, I heard steps... Finally! I had found them! I turned around and there was a young boy with beautiful golden curly hair looking at me. He was so sweet and cute but I had never seen him. He might have just arrived from a neighbouring place. 'What's your name?' I asked. 'Marco', he answered. Mientras estaba caminando, escuché pasos... ¡Por fin! ¡Las había encontrado! Me di vuelta y allí estaba un joven con un hermoso cabello dorado con rizos mirándome. Él era tan dulce y tierno pero nunca lo había visto. Tal vez había llegado recién de un lugar vecino. "¿Cuál es tu nombre?" Le pregunté. "Marco", él respondió. But when he answered, his voice made me tremble. He had a deep voice as if he were and adult in a boy's body. 'I am looking for you' he said. 'Your mother is waiting for you; I'll take you there with her' were his words. Pero cuando respondió, su voz me hizo temblar. Tenia una voz grave como si fuera un adulto en el cuerpo de un niño. "Te estoy buscando a vos" él dijo. "Tu madre esta esperándote; te llevaré alla con ella" fueron sus palabras. Looking for me? My mum? We were 220 km from home. I didn't believe a word from him and it was then, when I remembered a legend my grandpa used to tell us... Yasy yateré[8] they call it. It is a creature that has the appearance of a boy but it is in fact an adult that wants to take you away from your parents and never allow you to come back.¿Buscándome? ¿Mi mamá? Estabamos a 220 km de casa. No le crei una palabra pero fue allí, cuando recordé una leyenda que mi abuelo solia contarnos... Yasy yateré lo llaman. Es una criatura que tiene la apariencia de un niño, pero es de hecho un adulto que quiere llevarte lejos de tus padres y nunca permitirte volver. I had to come back. I could not be enchanted by this little boy. I took a glance at him and I remembered saying 'Let's run together so we can get there faster'. Debía regresar. No podia dejarme encantar por este pequeño niño. Le di un vistazo y recuerdo decirle "Corramos juntos así podemos llegar más rápido". Running? I was so bad at running but my life was at risk so I decided to give it a shot. 'This way', he said. 'No! I know a shortcut' I said and I started running. I ran, and ran and ran and ran!! I felt as if I had run more distance than ever! ¿Correr? Era tan mala corriendo, pero mi vida estaba en riesgo así que decidí darle una chance. "Por aquí", me dijo. "¡No! Conozco un atajo" le dije y comencé a correr. ¡¡Corrí, y corrí y corrí y corrí!! ¡Sentí que había corrido más distancia que nunca! Distance, space, time, silence... I thought I could hear the birds singing again, so I opened my eyes and Mariana and Sole were standing and looking at me as if I were dead. I saw myself lying on the ground and I could not understand it. What had happened? 'We were running' I said. 'We?' Mariana said. 'YOU were running and YOU hit your head with one tree, we thought you were dead!', Sole said highlighting that I was running alone. Distancia, espacio, tiempo, silencio... Pensé que podía escuchar los pájaros cantando de nuevo, entonces abrí los ojos y Mariana y Sole estaban paradas mirándome como si estuviera muerta. Me vi a mi misma tirada en el suelo y no podía entenderlo. ¿Qué había ocurrido? "Estábamos corriendo" dije. "¿Estábamos?" Mariana dijo. "¡VOS estabas corriendo y VOS te golpeaste la cabeza con un árbol, pensamos que estabas muerta!", Sole dijo resaltando que yo estaba corriendo sola. Marco was with me; I was not alone... Where was Marco? Maybe it was just my imagination. 'Let's go home', I said. Marco estaba conmigo; yo no estaba sola... ¿Dónde estaba Marco? Tal vez solo fue mi imaginación. "Vamos a casa", dije. My grandpa was at home. Mariana and Sole went to help my grandma that was at the stable. When grandpa saw me, he hugged me... so tight... that I knew he knew. 'Are you ok?', he said. 'I think I am', I answered. 'I heard the whistle and I knew he was looking for you. It was not a dream but don't tell your cousin and aunt or they will be afraid. I will take care of it', he said. Mi abuelo estaba en casa. Mariana y Sole fueron a ayudar a mi abuela que estaba en el establo. Cuando el abuelo me vió, me abrazó... tan fuerte... que supe que él sabía. "¿Estás bien?", él dijo. "Creo que sí", respondí. "Escuché el silbido y supe que él te estaba buscando. No fue un sueño, pero no les digas a tu prima y tia o van a tener miedo. Yo me encargaré de eso.", él dijo. Take care of it? In what way? Some days passed by and another siesta, we were in the woods playing again and I saw, at the distance, the golden curly hair but he did not approach; and it was then, that I knew grandpa had taken care. He did not hurt him but surely he was not going to come near us again anymore. ¿Encargarse de eso? ¿De qué manera? Algunos dias pasaron y otra siesta, estabamos en el bosque jugando de nuevo y ví, a la distancia, el cabello dorado rizado, pero él no se acercó; y fue allí, que supe que el abuelo se había encargado. Él no lo lastimó, pero seguramente nunca mas se iba a acercar a nosotras. Believe it or not, up to this day, at siesta time, when I am sitting with my tereré by my side...I think about Marco. Was he good? Was he bad? Was he alone? Does he still live? I have not been at La Perla for a long time now and I think one of the reasons why is because now I am a mum, and I do not know if I could let my little girl go to the woods as I used to do it. Creelo o no, hasta este dia, a la siesta, cuando estoy sentada con mi tereré alado... pienso en Marco. ¿Era bueno? ¿Era malo? ¿Estaba solo? ¿Vive todavía? No he ido a la Perla por mucho tiempo y creo que una de las razones es porque ahora soy mamá, y no sé si podría dejar a mi pequeña niña ir al bosque como solia hacerlo yo. Siesta... tereré... La Perla... Yasy yateré... Maybe it was just a kid's fantasy... or not? Tal vez sólo fue una fantasía de una niña... ¿o no? [1] A cold infusion made of yerba mate, water and ice.
